  • Substitution: Wrong character typed. Example: "hause" instead of "house"
  • Addition: Extra character typed. Example: "computeer" instead of "computer"

How Errors and Speed Are Calculated

  1. The formula to calculate total word countis by taking the full amount of characters typed divided by 5, thus in this case, if you typed 1900 characters, your total word count would be 1900 divided by 5 for a total of 380 words typed.
  2. Gross WPMis calculated by taking the total number of words divided by the time that was taken to type, so in this case, you would take 380 words divided by 10 minutes giving you gross wpm of 38.
  3. To calculate errors you would add full errors plus half errors divided by two. Therefore if you made 10 full errors and 8 half errors you would take 10 plus 8 divided by 2 for total errors are 14.
  4. Calculation of error percentageis done by dividing total errors by total words multiplied by 100. Therefore if you have 14 errors divided by 380 words multiplied by 100 would give you an error percentage of 3.68%.
  5. To calculate net wpmyou would subtract gross wpm from (gross wpm multiplied by error percentage). In this case- 38 gross wpm minus (38 times 0.0368) would equal 36.6 net wpm.

The last step in this process is to compare your net wpm to the required speed and your error percentage to the allowed limits.

Conclusion: Qualified - 36.6 WPM exceeds 35 WPM requirement and 3.68% is below the 7% limit.

Typing Preparation Advice for The SSC CHSL Typing Exam

  • Learn to touch type with correct finger placement. Your eyes should be on the screen, not the keyboard, when typing.
  • Practice typing only on a physical computer keyboard. The actual SSC test is conducted on a desktop computer with a physical QWERTY keyboard. Mobile or tablet practice will not help.
  • Increase typing stamina gradually. Typing continuously for 10 minutes requires physical and mental endurance.
  • Aim for accuracy first, then speed. Achieving 45 WPM with 15% errors results in failure. Achieving 37 WPM with 5% errors ensures qualification.
  • Identify weak areas by analyzing mistakes in practice tests and focus on improving those specific areas.
