1. What is the SSC CGL Typing Test?

SSC CGL Typing Test (officially known as the Data Entry Speed Testor DEST) is an important skill test that will be conducted after a candidate has successfully passed Tier 1 Examinations. This typing skill test is required for certain SSC CGL posts and is qualifying in nature. If you fail the typing test, this will lead to your being eliminated from the examination.

2. Speed & Keystroke Requirements

Candidates are required to type a printed or on-screen passage which is approx 2,000-keystroke total.

  • Test Duration: 15 minutes of active typing.
  • Target Keystrokes: 2,000 key depressions (with a permissible variance of +/- 5%).
  • Required Speed: Roughly 27 Words Per Minute (WPM). This is calculated by dividing 2,000 keystrokes by 5 (the standard word length), yielding 400 words.

3. SSC Typing Test Error Calculation Formula

Types of Errors and their Penalty, The SSC uses a detailed classification system for errors that gives each type of error different penalty weights:

Full Errors (1 Error Each)

Major keyboarding errors that alter the copy in a significant manner:

Omission: A character or word is missing from the text. For example: "goverment" instead of "government"; 'N' is left off

Substitution: A different character is typed in place of the correct character. For example: "hoise" instead of "house"; an 'O' was typed to replace an 'I'

Addition: An extra character is typed where it shouldn't be. For example: "computeer" instead of "computer"; an extra 'E' was typed.

Repetition: A character or word is typed more than once for no reason. For example: "the the government" or "helllo" instead of "hello".

Half Errors (0.5 Error Each)

Minor keyboarding errors that have to do with formatting or spacing:

Space Error: When you forget a space between words, or add extra space. For example: "thegovernment" or "the government" double-space.

Capitalization Error: You incorrectly capitalized a letter. For example: "india" instead of "India"; "The" instead of "the".

Punctuation Error: You forgot a punctuation mark, not in the right place, or an extra punctuation mark is present. For example: "Hello world" instead of "Hello, world"; "said." instead of "said,"

4. How errors and speed are calculated

  • Total Keystrokes - Number of keys you typed (letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation, special characters).
  • Total Words- Total Keystrokes divided by 5 are total words. If you typed 2,200 keystrokes, Total Words would equal 2,200 ÷ 5=440 words.
  • Total Errors=Full Errors + (Half Errors)/2.
  • Error Percentage(Total Errors ÷ Total Keystrokes) x 100. For example, if you had 30 Errors out of 2,200, then (30 ÷ 2,200) x 100=1.36%.
  • Qualification Status- Compare the error percentage to the allowed limits set by the examination you took.

Example

If you type for 15 minutes, you typed 2,100 keystrokes, 20 full errors, and 10 half errors.

  • Count Total Keystrokes=2,100
  • Count Total Words=2,100 ÷ 5=420
  • Count Total Errors=20 + (10 ÷ 2)=20 + 5=25
  • Count total errors as %=(25 ÷ 2,100) x 100=1.19%
  • URs Allowed limits 20%

Conclusion: Qualified, 1.19% is below the 20%.
